Why take the IMR Course?
Studying for my final examinations in 2012 was a stressful and frustrating experience – there was so much subject matter to cover, and everyone I approached for advice gave me different study tools – texts, online reviews, study notes. I wished there was a review course – as there are in most other medical and surgical specialties in Canada and the US – that could help me narrow my studies… so after successfully completing my exams, I created one!
This course was designed by new General Internists after surveying their colleagues for topics that were felt to be relevant and high-yield subject matter for Canadian Internal Medicine trainees preparing for final exams. After successful sell-out live conferences in 2013-2020, we held our first ever virtual conference in 2021. The virtual format has been favoured by residents to reduce travel time and conference costs. Content has been updated and expanded for the 2024 program for residents preparing to write their final exams. In 2023, 99.8% of attendees recommended the IMR course to other residents as a “must-take” study tool when preparing for their Internal Medicine examinations.
The 2.5 day course is available to all residents and International Medical Graduates pursuing Internal Medicine specialization in Canada. Course material will be supplemented by online physical examination videos and course notes available exclusively to attendees.

About Dr. McKenna
Ann Marie McKenna, MD, FRCPC
Founder and Chairperson
Dr. McKenna completed her specialty training in Internal Medicine at the University of Toronto in 2012, acting in the capacity of Chief Medical Resident at St. Michael’s Hospital in her final year. She successfully completed both her Royal College and American Board of Internal Medicine exams in 2012. She now works in a community Internal Medicine practice at the North Bay Regional Health Centre in North Bay, Ontario.
Her academic and teaching record is reflected in the caliber of content available to participants of the Internal Medicine Review.
- Recipient of the award for Best Community Clinical Teacher, 2016-2019 and 2021, Northern Ontario School of Medicine.
- Recipient of the Jean Rochefort Teaching Award for excellence in teaching at the North Bay Regional Health Center.
- Recipient of multiple awards for excellence in clinical medicine, including the Medical Alumni Gold Medal – awarded for the highest overall standing in the graduating medical class of the University of Western Ontario.
She has successfully directed and organized a number of academic meetings, including acting as Founder, Chair and organizer for the Internal Medicine Review, 2013-2024.
Dr. McKenna has a wealth of experience stewarding both non-profit and charitable organizations. As a Fundraising Director and Executive member of 3 non-profit organizations in the past, she has fundraised and managed over $350,000 in grants and corporate sponsorship.
